Mission Statement
The DJP Yellowjackets Drumline empowers youth through rhythm, discipline, and leadership, honoring the proud legacy of Austin’s Anderson Yellow Jackets while building a new tradition of excellence, unity, and cultural pride.
Who We Are
The DJP Yellowjackets Drumline is a high-energy, youth-centered performance ensemble rooted in discipline, excellence, and community pride. Inspired by the legendary L.C. Anderson High School Yellow Jackets—the all-Black high school that stood as a beacon of academic and athletic excellence in segregated Austin—we carry forward a tradition of resilience, achievement, and cultural strength.
Just as the Yellowjackets dominated on the field and filled stadiums with pride, we strive for precision, unity, and showmanship in every performance. Our drumline is more than music—it is legacy in motion, building confident leaders who understand the power of rhythm, history, and community.
Honoring an Historic Legacy
Old L.C. Anderson High School was the only public high school for Black students in Austin during segregation and became a symbol of excellence, resilience, and East Austin pride. Its championship football teams, renowned marching band, and culture of achievement left a lasting mark on the city.
Dr. James Polk, a proud product of that era of musical and cultural excellence, carried that same spirit into his legendary career as a jazz pianist and mentor. Our drumline stands at the intersection of those legacies—honoring Anderson’s tradition while advancing Dr. Polk’s lifelong commitment to artistic excellence and community empowerment.
